Herbs that Tonify the Qi

 

 

Channels: LU, SP

Properties: Sweet, Slightly Warm

Common: Astragalus

Latin: Radix Astragali Membranacei

Actions:

  • Tonify the middle Jiao Qi, raise the Yang Qi
  • Tonify Lung Qi and strengthen the exterior defence
  • Promote urination and reduce edema
  • Promote the discharge of pus and generate flesh

 

  1. Deficiency middle Jiao Qi and sinking Qi: fatigue, lack appetite, chronic diarrhea, prolapse of organs, lower grade fever, bleeding; e.g. Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang, with Dang Shen, Bai Zhu, Sheng Ma, Gan Cao
  2. Lung Qi feficiency cuase spontaneous sweating, shorten breath, easily catch cold, chronic cough or asthma, lower voice; e.g. Yu Ping Feng San with Bai Zhu, Fanf Feng
  3. Qi deficiency cause edma or difficult urination; e.g. with Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, Ze Xie, Fang Ji
  4. Qi and Blood deficiency cause chronic skin ulcerations or pus; e.g. with Dan Gui, Zao Jiao Ci
  5. Blood deficiency or blood stasis with Qi deficiency, numbness, paralysis

 

Dosage:

  • 9-30g

Precaution:

  • Patients with excessive heat, toxic heat Qi stagnation should be prohibited
