Actions:

  • Clears heat and cools the blood: for heat in the ying level causing very high fever, thirst, and a dark red tongue. Also used for hemorrhage, epitasis, spitting blood, bloody urine, and uterine bleeding.
  • Nourishes the yin, increases fluids: for injured yin from heat causing dry mouth, throat pain, wasting and thirsting disorder, and constipation.
  • Clears heart fire: for irritability, restlessness, mouth and tongue sores, or insomnia.

Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in spleen and stomach deficiency (diarrhea or loose stool), dampness, yang deficiency and pregnant women with blood deficiency.

Dosage:

 

  • 9-30g. Fresh root is used to treat thirst and bleeding from exterior heat. Dried root is used for bleeding from deficiency of yin and blood.
